England is preparing for the rollout of the Simpler Recycling regulations, which are set to come into effect in March 2025. These measures, introduced by the government, aim to standardise and simplify waste management and recycling practices across all sectors. The regulations will apply universally, covering households (including flats), businesses and public spaces such as schools, hospitals, etc.
Led by the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA), the Simpler Recycling initiative seeks to address environmentally damaging waste practices and promote sustainable solutions.
Read on to find out how these updated DEFRA regulations could impact you and your organisation:
Conduct a Waste Audit
• Begin by listing all waste generated in your business, categorising it into organic: (e.g., food waste) and non-organic: (e.g., plastic, metals). Be thorough—include specific categories like biomedical, pharmaceutical, or hazardous waste, if relevant.
• Prepare Necessary PPE. Equip yourself with the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to conduct the audit safely. Items such as rubber globes, coveralls and masks.
• Pinpoint Waste Zones. Inspect your business site to locate areas where waste is generated and disposed of. Look for opportunities to improve, such as adding recycling bins or enhancing PPE stations.
• Examine Waste by Area. Evaluate the type, volume, and disposal methods for waste in each area. Track how often bins are emptied, the number of rubbish bags used in a week, and how waste is stored or sorted before collection.
• Sort and Measure Waste. At the end of the audit period, sort and weigh the collected waste. Use this data to project monthly and yearly trends. Identify gaps, such as insufficient recycling bins, and ensure compliance with Simpler Recycling guidelines, for sorting requirements.
In its mission to achieve net zero by 2050, the UK government supports businesses with sustainability grants. Waste management specialists can also assist you with grant information and help you devise and implement a compliant scheme.
